PREVENTING AND FIGHTING THE EFFECTS OF FLOODS
IN THE SATU MARE URBAN AREAC.O. MAREŞ
Abstract. Preventing and fighting the effects of floods in the Satu Mare urban area. The paper addresses a series of aspects related to the floods and floodings propagated on the Someș River in the sector and the proximity of the Satu Mare urban area. Over time, the area under study was affected by a succession of floods propagated on the Lower Somes River, generating varying degrees of damage to the Satu Mare community culminating in the catastrophic flood of 1970. To prevent and counteract the effects of river floods, a series of technical measures specific to defence against floods, such as: river bed rectifications and recalibration, dams, bank consolidation, etc. Authorities with competence in this field have developed flood maps at different probabilities by highlighting the possible scenarios for the Satu Mare urban area. Also, we cannot omit the winter phenomena that appear on the watercourse, especially the snow that can generate significant obstructions and increases in the water levels upstream.
