ABSTRACT. -The Principal Risks that Threats the Leading Role of the European Union as a Protagonist of the World Economy. The enlarging of the European Union (EU) is a challenging act, that is probing the inner cohesion of this macroregional integration of the European states. At the same time, partially in connection with the process of enlarging, there is many risks that threathen the world political and world economical leading position of the EU. The paper is aiming to examine this sort of risks. From the political point of view the main risks are the following: the fragmentation of the Union in nation states, some kind of suspiciousness with historical roots, that is still characterizing the relationship of member states, first of all in Eastern Europe, the excessive political and economical competition between the member states and the lack of a common foreign and defence policy. The economical risks are the following: the technological backwardness and the low grade productivity and efficiency in comparison with the main rivals, the demographical erosion, the constant delaying of the reforms of the member states budget and the Unions budget as well, the unnecessary sustaining of the Common Agricultural policy. This factors, without profound changings can lead to the economic lag in relationship with the United States and East Asia.
