ABSTRACT. - Environmental risk and methods of studying it. Viewpoints. On the basis of the specialist literature and of the author's own studies, some original remarks on current knowledge concerning the definition of such notions as risk, hazard and catastrophe are put forward. The highlight is on environmental risk and natural environmental components (climatic, hydrologic, geomorphic, ecologic risks, etc.) as well as human - triggered risks (social, health, demographic, political, etc.). The causes underlying these risk situations are discussed, the idea being that each risk unleashes cascading risk situations. The climate risks are largely incriminated, they dynamising the geosystem and causing lots of damage and casualties even. The methodology of studying environmental risks covers much of the paper and some conceptual models are underscored. Special emphasis is placed on the interdisciplinary approaches providing a groundwork for correct management measures to be taken at local, regional and global levels.
